New numbers were released today from the CDC that the autism rates have risen from 1 in 110 to 1 in 88 children in the US. These studies show that autism is 5 times more common in boys than in girls with 1 in 54 boys now diagnosed on the autism spectrum. While some doctors (such as the one I heard reporting these numbers today) continue to claim that these numbers are rising just simply because of better screening processes, this does not explain these astounding numbers. As an adult in my late 30′s, it is difficult to convince me that the numbers were this high when I was growing up since I never remember anyone having the condition. Also, where are the 1 in 88 adults + that are running around with the condition that were undiagnosed?
While I don’t dispute that broader qualifications and screening contribute to the rising numbers, it cannot explain a jump from 1 in 10,000 in the 1980′s to 1 in 88 just over 30 years later. There is no doubt that this chemical soup we are living in is starting to seriously affect our children health. Genetics don’t change that dramatically in 30 years either as some would like to believe. Most doctors do admit that there probably is an environmental factor in the puzzle.
Children today are bombarded by toxic chemicals before they are even born these days. From genetically modified foods in over 70% of foods today, toxic, heavy metals in our food, water and air, untested toxic chemicals in personal products for mom and baby, lead and estrogen-mimicking chemicals in toys, lotions, food, and more and more aluminum and other chemical laden vaccinations recommended for pregnant women that have never been tested for safety in pregnant women (and even the vaccine inserts claim they aren’t proven safe for this population) …we are overloading these tiny bodies with chemicals we know little to nothing about at mind-boggling levels. The US now has one of the worst infant and maternal mortality rates in the industrialized world at #32 in 33 countries. We have created more and more interventions and “medical breakthroughs”, yet more of our moms are dying than nearly all developed countries in the world minus Russia, Albania and Moldova. Our children are sicker than many countries that are considered 2nd or 3rd world.
So what is the answer?
For many it is even MORE interventions, MORE radiation to our food and bodies, MORE chemicals for our food and products and MORE medicine. How does this make sense as this philosophy isn’t working. After all, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result! But for a small but growing group, there is a movement for LESS interventions and MORE preventions. LOWER exposure to toxic chemcials, eating organic, buying products that are more like they were 30 years ago, with less plastic, more real wood, no chemicals, and more ingredients from nature. Buying local food from growers who farm in a sustainable way, avoiding all GMOs, unnecessary interventions and instead focusing on staying healthy as a preventative measure, and choosing safe products. I am interested to see what happens in 20 years when the health of the group of children who are raised by the people considered crazy “zealots” like myself are compared to children who are raised in the typical American manner full of GMOs, chemicals, antibiotics and interventions.
When is the tipping point? When is the comment “These chemicals are no big deal and I am just fine and my kids are just fine” not believable anymore? Why is it human nature to not care about these things until you or your loved one has become ill and you are trying to reverse the damage rather than prevent? I have to believe there will be a point where everyone can see the damaging effects of these chemicals on our children, believe it is true, and act to change it for the health of our children, grandchildren, and the future of mankind and our earth…and I hope it is sooner rather than later. There will be a point of no return where all crops are contaminated with GMO, our oceans are toxic and over-fished, our rivers, streams and water are poisoned beyond repair, and we have damaged our earth in the name of progress so badly that we can’t turn back. What number is high enough to get our attention and to force us to change? Is it 1 in 88?
