With Earth Day quickly approaching I would like to share with you a series of books that are great for the little ones!

Meet Pee Wee and learn about composting in  Pee Wee and the Magical Compost Heap , amazing illustrated adventure books to help teach composting Fun & Factual, by author Larraine Roulston

Last year I contacted author  Larraine Roulston for more information about Pee Wee’s adventures and she sent me the whole series to enjoy.

I learned so much from The Pee Wee adventure series that I just had to tell you about it.

In her first book “Pee Wee and the Magical Compost Heap”, we are introduced to a group of children who get magically transported inside a compost heap where they meet an amazing little worm, Pee Wee. Pee Wee and the insect friends, take the kids on a tour of the compost heap and explain with fun and facts, what composting is!

When you read these books with your children, I can almost guarantee that you will learn a few things as well.

As the series continues with the sequel, “Pee Wee’s Great Adventure”, Pee Wee describes an amazing adventure from a classroom worm bin to a backyard composter complete with instructions on how to care for worms and harvest their castings.

coverNext comes “Pee Wee’s Family in a Nutshell” where we learn the differences between vermicomposting and backyard composting.

This is followed by “Pee Wee goes to the Fair”. In this installment Pee Wee takes all the compost critters to a Spring Environmental Science Fair where the kids display their elaborately decorated worm bin.

Why stop there? They don’t! The adventures continue with “Pee Wee’s Magical Compost Tea”. In this story the kids go on a field trip and learn the benefits of compost tea while Pee Wee and the compost critters plan a compost tea party of their own inside a rotting Jack-o-lantern!

Larraine has put together a wonderful series of books that not only take you on a magical adventure but they teach wonderful lessons and she has even

put together a teacher’s guide for interested environmental educators.

Larraine tells me that her ideas and inspiration have been a combination of her composting experiences, colleagues expertise, and children’s questions and reactions.

As well, she tries to include the passions of other environmental groups such as turning out lights when leaving a room, hanging out laundry to avoid dryer use, noting Waste Reduction Week and International Compost Awareness Week, organic and Fair Trade foods, water conservation, etc.
