Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) Found in Organic Formula?
Would you be surprised by what is labeled Organic baby formula?
So you are buying organic baby formula because you think it is the best formula choice for your baby right? And of course you have heard that DHA is imperative for proper brain development so it has to be in your formula! It just makes it that much closer to breastmilk right? Well the short answer is WRONG! It is yet just another way that companies mislead and confuse the consumer with their advertising. These days every company is jumping on the “whole grain”, “organic” and “DHA” bandwagon! Consumers are being told over and over that these are not only safe products, but better for your baby and family! Sadly, yet again, companies are putting chemicals in our products without us really knowing what is really in it.
At OBU, we found out about this a few years back when Horizon started adding the DHA to their milk. There was a huge uproar from the organic industry as this was a chemical NOT allowed in organic products, yet they were doing it anyway. Then it was the formula companies, both organic and conventional, jumping on the DHA craze and adding to nearly every formula on the market. So what is DHA anyway? How is it extracted and added to infant formula anyway? And the real question….it is better…or even safe??
“Almost all DHA is genetically modified soil fungus and algae used as nutritional supplements in organic food. The product is an omega 3/omega-6 oil (DHA/ARA) synthesized from fermented algae and soil fungus.The oil is extracted from this biomass using hexane, a neurotoxic byproduct of gasoline refinement that is specifically banned in organics. ”
So it is a genetically modified ingredient that is extracted using a toxic chemical? Doesn’t sound like something that should be in baby formula does it? Especially not organic!
And of course it is no shocker to learn that many of their products were created by Monsanto before Martek bought the rights. Except for Baby’s Only Formula (which is the only formula we recommend at this point at OBU), all organic formulas contain DHA derived in this manner. (Baby’s Only has it’s own issues and concenrs with the arsenic recently found in brown rice syrup in formulas).
Complaints filed as reported adverse reactions to this chemical includes
- Severe gas
- Diarrhea and vomiting
- Gastric reflux
- Constipation and bowel obstruction
- Agitation, fussiness, crying, and severe distress
So what can you do?
- First is to breastfeed if you can! This way you can control much of what your baby is exposed to by controlling what you eat and drink rather than relying on a corporation who is concerned about their bottom line!
- Second, is to try to purchase from companies who are not using chemicals in their products. Companies want to make money…and when profits fall because consumers are not purchasing due to concerns with safety…they will change their products!
- Last is to write to the companies and ask them to take the GMOs, high fructose corn syrup, antibiotics, arsenic, hormones and other chemicals OUT of baby formula! Ask them to do right by your child!
Not all moms can breastfeed, and learning the chemicals that are added to formula can be concerning, or even devastating for some moms! Over 70% of all babies are fed some formula by the time they are 6 months old. Let’s have SAFE options for those moms and their babies.
