What if instead of filling landfills with Garbage, we could reuse it to build homes?

Beer cans, bottles, car tires…  doesn’t sound like a construction list, right?

It does if you are renegade eco-architect Michael Reynolds, in which case they are tools of choice for producing building energy-independent housing.

For more than 30 years Reynolds and a group of like minded green disciples devoted their time to advancing the art of what he calls “Earthship Biotecture”. Building homes from Garbage and powering them off the Grid with alternative energy from the sun and wind

Earthship n. 1. passive solar home made of natural and recycled materials 2. thermal mass construction for temperature stabilization. 3. renewable energy & integrated water systems make the Earthship an off-grid home with little to no utility bills.

Biotecture n. 1. the profession of designing buildings and environments with consideration for their sustainability. 2. A combination of biology and architecture.

For years they built self-sufficient, off-the-grid communities where design and function were the driving force and mistakes help to advance progress. Trial and error led to some very efficient experimental structures that defy state standards but also created conflict between Reynolds and the authorities, who are backed by big business.

Frustrated by the rules and regulations that shut down his community and realizing that he was not going to beat them by butting heads, Reynolds lobbies for the right to create a sustainable living test site.

“I crawled up their Ass and am going to change them from the bloodstream” says architect Michael Reynolds of his journey into the Senate to lobby for his sustainable housing development.

And that is just what he did, he became one of them…
