Say No to Single Use items, replace with reusable!

Being Green is many things to many people. In my opinion as I have stated many times before, every little step counts.

It could seem like a small thing but if we all make out little steps, we will make a big difference.

As always it starts with reducing, reusing and recycling!

Today I want to talk about reusing.

Convenience has become mother natures enemy number one!

We have been brainwashed into thinking convenience at any cost to the environment is okay.

It is not Okay!

We have become custom to using an item once and throwing it in the trash. Just because the replacement is inexpensive.

Why not spend a little extra, get something that can be used more than once and save some natural resources, save some energy and in the end, save some money.

Many cities have already banned single use plastic bags, kudos to them. More communities need to follow suit.

Remember to carry your bags in your vehicle at all times, for the market, department stores, etc… BYOB bring your own bags!

But what else can we do?

Throwing a party? Think about the waste involved from one use decorations, flatware, cups, plates, etc…

How can you make your party more environmentally conscious?

- buy party tableware that is reusable, recyclable, made from BPA-free recycled plastic, and dishwasher-safe. Than use it for all of your parties. see preserveproducts.com

Please share with us your Green Party ideas and we will do a post on our readers top ideas to throwing a Green Party!

Another one use item that needs to be replaced, dry cleaning bags and hangers. My first choice would be to say no to dry cleaning altogether but if you can find a Green Dry cleaner than opt to take you own bag.

I like It’s My Bag which was developed to rid the landfills of one use dry cleaning bags but has grown to be much more. Visit itsmyb.com to find out more.

Don’t get me started on paper towels, save yourself a bundle by and buy cloth from someone like Coastal Wipers and use again and again.

Have a baby, use cloth diapers, need I say more.

How many batteries do you throw away? Invest in rechargeable batteries and start saving cash and the environment.

No More Zip lock storage bags, use a BPA free plastic container or glass food storage containers that can go from fridge to microwave to dishwasher and start all over again!

Buying a coffee on the go, take your own travel mug,

Say no to bottles of water, once again, invest in a good reusable. They even have some with built in filters so you can use tap water any where you go! I like the Gobie H2O, but there are many options out there.

There are many ways that you can make a difference, it all starts by thinking about what you do before you do it, think before you buy, think before you use:

1. will this harm the environment?

2. can I reuse this item, or is there an alternative that I can reuse?

3. what is used to make this item?

4. will I use this once and throw it away?

5. If it is a one use item, is it compostable, is it recyclable?

I am sure you have some items to add to this list, please leave a comment with your ideas.

What not to use, alternatives, etc….  don’t use the “D” word… (disposable) ugh!

Until next time
