The Case Against the Conventional Toxic Tampon
I have always found it funny over the last several years of teaching about safer products that feminine hygiene products seem to get overlooked…or even snickered about. Why is laughter the common response when I teach about organic cotton tampons and pads?! Maybe that is because it is a personal topic…or maybe it is because people think that it is silly to have organic tampons. I think the reason is a little bit of both actually! But the laughter really just shows that women really don’t know what is in this category of products…and how it may adversely affect their health! Read on to learn why it may not be as funny as you think.
-First, is Feminine hygiene products are one of the products that you will use for well over half your lifetime if not longer! So the chemicals that are in your products will continue to expose you to health risks for a huge part of your life
-Second, is conventional feminine hygiene products admit to contain amounts of one of the most toxic chemical out there…dioxin, which is created in the bleaching process
-Third, is both pads and tampons are also loaded with other nasty chemicals such as phthalates (fragranced items) that are linked to birth defects and other health issues, pesticides, rayon, and those “super absorbent” chemicals!
-Last is that because of the nature of the product, your body will absorb more of the chemicals than in most other personal products. When tampons are removed fibers are left behind which can also leave chemicals behind to continue to be absorbed by the body. The FDA admits that some tampons contain dioxins but claim that they are found in such small amounts that it does not pose a health risk. However, dioxin is an extremely toxic chemical and the nature of this product will expose your body to this and the other ingredients over and over for a large part of your life.
While tampons are not used during pregnancy, it is important to have this information for pre and postpartum. Also, pads are often used both during and after pregnancy so it is important to cover this product. As with the other personal products you may chose to cut any risk and purchase products that do not contain any of these chemicals. So you can see why it is best to choose chlorine-free products that also are cotton and best is organic cotton with no chemicals.
So which are the best out there? We did our research and have found the company with the “cleanest” and safest materials out there! Maxim Hygiene!
A little about their products:
• Made with 100% Certified Organic and Natural Cotton – A more naturally breathable fiber that is better for your Body, Earth and Health.
• Chlorine/Dioxin Free – Keeping carcinogens away from your most intimate body parts.
• Synthetic Free – For a Softer, Non-Irritable, and Plastic-less feel.
• Wood Fluff Pulp Free – More Breathable and Absorbent & Uniquely Saving Trees.
• Hypoallergenic/Irritation Free – No more rashes, even for those with the most sensitive skin.
• Eco-Friendly & User-Friendly Too! – Maintaining product performance while keeping the environment safe.
They are one of the only (if not the only) product line out there that doesn’t use wood pulp and therefore doesn’t use trees! That is what makes them really stand out in the “organic” hygiene industry! So avoid conventional products to protect yourself from the dangers of toxic chemicals…and buy Maxim to take it a step further and help protect out environment! And yes they do work just as well as their toxic counterparts! They are a SAFE product that WORKS! Yay!
Maxim offers pads (yes maternity pads for you mama!), tampons as well as a variety of personal care products like cotton balls, cottons rounds and cotton swabs! So give them a try! There is no reason to have toxins in any part of your body!

It is just awful how many products in the home contain toxins that can have a negative effect on all of us, especially the young and the old.
Hopefully through open dialogue and educating one another we will eventually educate the powers that be and get some changes to take place!
