There are Three R’s in the Green Living Mantra – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
They are in a specific order.
Reduce is the first, but why?
Because this is where it all begins, if we can reduce our consumption there will be less to reuse or recycle. The less that you buy, the that less has to be made the less has to be transported, the less has to be disposed of, etc…
The best way to reduce waste is not to create waste! This leads us directly to the number two R, Reuse!
Reusing an item will help to reduce. If you can reuse something over and over again, there will be no need to replace, thus reducing….
Eventually even reusable items may have to be retired… this is when we try to use our third R, Recycle.
Recycling can mean taking an item to a recycle location to be properly recycled, placing in a recycle bin, or you can upcycle an item.
When an item is recycled it is broken down and remanufactured into a new item
Upcycling is kind of reusing but reusing for something other than an items original use. Many artists and craftsman upcycle objects into new items, upcycling can be as simple as reusing a jar as a container, using an old toothbrush to clean your tile grout, or turning an old light bulb into a vase.
Most everybody knows that recycling helps to save the environment by reducing the use of new raw materials. As a society, as a world united in the cause to protect and preserve the planet, recycling has become a way of life for many.
This is a good thing and we need to continue to educate people on the importance of recycling, but what could be even more important than recycling?
Just remember the three R’s in the Green Mantra,
Where to begin?
